Happy Earth Day! Giveaway! (Bags and Free Patterns!)

No sermons here. If you're a breathing human adult, you're aware of the importance of taking care of our dear planet. To push things along a bit, though, I'm having a giveaway! Some details.....

My personal pet peeve is plastic bags. For the past couple of years I've tried to train myself to say, "I don't need a bag," as often as I can. It's difficult at first to remember, but it's amazing how often you don't need a bag. Of course, I live in the suburbs and drive a car, so it's easy to carry things from the store to the car and just plop them on the seat. When I lived in the city and walked everywhere, then you do need a bag, which brings me to.....Giveaway!

I'll pick 5 people at random and they will each get this bag:

AND the Momogus Knits pattern of their choice emailed to them in PDF form (we'll save some trees!) I have a lot of reusable shopping bags, but these ChicoBags are my favorite - they fold up small into their attached pouch and have a clip to hold them to your purse.

Leave a comment here (make sure you add your email address in your comment) or on the Facebook page. Share an Earth Day thought, recycling tip, or nature appreciation, and also which pattern you'd like.

Here's mine: I'm pretty sure I was a tree in my last life. This big old tree in my backyard is like a soulmate for me:

I love looking at it in all seasons, I worry about it in windstorms, I pat it with my hand when I walk by it. Happy Earth Day, tree!

I've been using my own bags for so long that I once had security called on me when I resisted taking the store's bag! And I love being able to get patterns via PDF - instant gratification.

I am a huge fan of reusing bags and have knitted several "market bags" for friends.

I get many patterns via PDF and would like to suggest that those who make them consider the layout so that pages aren't wasted for 1 or 2 lines when printing them.

I love PDFs. I make my own notes and highlights and then print off the sections I need.

It is horrifying that we have to fight our own government to save the environment. A quick eco tip is: use wax paper not plastic wrap, and only buy PAPER TO PAPER products with high % of post consumer content. If every household in the U.S. replaced one 12-pack of 400 sheet virgin fiber bathroom tissue with 100% recycled ones, we could save:
* 4.4 million trees
* 11.6 million cubic feet of landfill space, equal to over 17,000 full garbage trucks
* 1.6 billion gallons of water, a year’s supply over 12,700 families of four
* And avoid 275,000 pounds of pollution”

And wouldn't the Adult Chestnut Hill Gansey Sweater look good knitted with recycled yarn from an old sweater?!

It is critical that we teach our children and grandchildren the importance of reusing and recycling. I love the purse pattern (DSCF4190).

Earth Day to me means getting out in my garden with my hands in the dirt. It's the most healing activity I can think of. I'd love to win that handy bag and the adult V-neck shell pattern. Anything I can knit in one piece is perfect!

My favourite Earth saving tip is...Composting! Not only does it help the environment but compost is also great to use in the garden. My mom always had a compost bin growing up and, luckily, it stuck with me! Just put a bucket in the kitchen or on the back steps and make a habit out of putting your biodegradable food scraps in it. Make a spot in the yard where you put your the food scraps every few days and before long, you will have some great fertilizer as well as the satisfaction of knowing you have done something great for the Earth!

Instead of printing all of the knitting patterns that I like, I save them to a thumb drive and only print them as needed. WhenI do print them, I save paper by printing 2 pages on the front and back of 1 sheet of paper, so that I am only using 1 sheet of paper for every 4 pages.

I use coffee grounds and crushed egg shells on top of my planted flowers for additional plant fertilizer. I know my flowers love it because they always smile at me!! I would love to win a PDF of Easy Baby's Cable Hats NS2, as I love to make hats to give away each winter. Thank you for considering me. Warmly, Debi adamsond@bellsouth.net

Love the reactions I get when I say no bag thanks. Still get plenty of people saying WHY? So strange to see someone walking out of the supermarket with 25 plastic bags...
Would love the adult gansey hat 14
Thanks

I have definitely tried over the last year or so to say 'no bag needed..thanks' and being mindful of using cloth bags at the grocery.

A few in our church congregation have fought a good battle to eliminate the use of paper & plastic. Doing a few dishes gives everyone an extra time to chat and share, like our ancestors did!!

Would love another bag! lkdcolson@rrt.net
